As a follow-up to the post above, I believe I have resolved the problem, which may or may not have been two separate problems.
I was copying a large number of. I bailed, and figured I'd come back to it later. I'm reasonably certain that it was SINCE that time that I got the above referenced windows update, which, when I checked out, was a not particularly well-documented item dated So, after trying the few things mentioned in my previous post which are still in place , I decided to revert my system status back to last Friday, the day before the update.
As soon as i did that, I was able to copy files to CD-Rs again. It has been smooth sailing since then. So, what I've taken away from this is: a Try the suggestions in the thread above you never know. Good luck to anyone else encountering this.
